Mastering English: Keys to Effective Studying

Mastering English

To study English, there are various factors to consider. Among them, you’ll find the intricate grammar (which is not as complicated as it may seem), vocabulary, the ability to listen and comprehend the language you are learning, and often, reading and writing as well. Each of these aspects is crucial for English learning, yet sadly, many people tend to overlook the latter two when they are equally important.

The Complex yet Fascinating Grammar

Mastering English

Let’s start with grammar, which might be a headache at first, but when mastered, it becomes a key that opens countless doors. Grammar is essential as it provides the foundation and knowledge to structure sentences correctly. It is crucial to study and comprehend it from the beginning. Why comprehend it? Because we need to know and understand how, when, and why to use specific structures in a given context. Saying something started in the year 2020 and ended within  the same year (meaning it no longer exists in the present) is not the same as saying something began in 2020 and continues in the present.

Past Simple vs. Present Perfect

For example, Past simple: “Yesterday, Maria walked to the park.” In this case, Maria’s walking to the park happened at a specific moment in the past (yesterday). There is no connection to the present. Present Perfect: “Maria has walked to the park.” Here, the focus is on the action completed and its connection to the present. Although no specific moment is mentioned, it

is understood that the action of walking to the park happened at some point before the present. The experience of walking to the park is relevant in the present.

Over time, after studying the language for a considerable period, constructing sentences will become so natural that you won’t have to consciously worry about it; it will happen automatically. However, as beginners, we must study grammar. So, how do you study it? Based on my experience, I’ll share the tools I used to make it easier later on.

Your Personal Guide to Learning

Mastering English

Grammar was always the first thing I studied in my study hours, ALWAYS. Why did I prioritize it? I believe grammar should come first because understanding it enables us to know where to place new vocabulary and helps us listen to audios, watch movies, cartoons, and interact with people who speak the language we are learning, in this case, English. So, placing grammar as the initial part of our study plan is the best approach.

The best thing you can do is to look for all the verb tenses and start from the simplest to the most advanced. How to study it? For example, the first three verb tenses are “Present Simple, Past Simple, and Future Simple.” With that in mind, you can start studying the grammar for each of them.
